Anal fistula is a small tunnel which connects the anal canal to the external skin.

  • Proctoscopy to look for internal opening
  • MRI perianal region can delineate the tracks properly.
  • Colonoscopy to diagnose internal openings and to rule out colonic cancers.

    Surgery is almost always necessary to cure an anal fistula

    Fistulotomy

  • opening of the fistulous tract in simple fistulas.
  • Fistulectomy- removal of the entire fistulous tract
  • LIFT- Ligation of the intersphinteric fistulous tract
  • Anal advancement flaps
  • Seton placement for complex and high anal fistulas.
